AERKOMM expands presence in Asia through new partnership with Eutelsat's OneWeb LEO services.
AERKOMM's Japan subsidiary secures distribution rights for Eutelsat OneWeb's 634-satellite Low-Earth-Orbit constellation across Japan and Taiwan, targeting commercial fixed and land-mobility markets.
AERKOMM Inc. has signed a Distribution Partner Agreement with the Eutelsat Group to distribute OneWeb Low-Earth-Orbit (“LEO”) satellite services. The agreement, concluded in late September 2024, grants AERKOMM’s subsidiary AERKOMM Japan distribution rights for LEO connectivity in Japan (commercial fixed and land-mobility) and Taiwan (commercial land-mobility).
Eutelsat OneWeb’s 634-satellite constellation provides low-latency, high-throughput connectivity across the two markets — a meaningful step up from geostationary alternatives in terms of both responsiveness and reach.
“This collaboration marks a pivotal milestone in our growth and expansion strategy,” said AERKOMM CEO Louis Giordimaina.
Target markets
AERKOMM Japan is initially focused on the recreational-vehicle and land-mobile markets. Mordor Intelligence research cited in the announcement projects the RV market growing from $33.23 billion in 2024 to $49.18 billion by 2029, an 8.15% CAGR. Combined with the coverage gaps that still exist across rural and offshore Japan, this creates a substantial addressable opportunity for LEO-based service.
Why LEO here
Where GEO satellites still dominate legacy connectivity, LEO’s lower altitude drives materially lower latency and higher throughput — the two attributes that matter most for the mobility use cases AERKOMM is targeting. Layering OneWeb’s LEO capacity onto AERKOMM’s existing multi-orbit ground network gives Japanese and Taiwanese operators a single, orbit-agnostic path to broadband service.
